Cultivation of the olive was an important part of life
in the ancient world. Olive oil was precious, and known
to bring good health and beauty. The goddess Athena
was believed to have planted herself the famous olive
tree on the Acropolis. As early as 2800 years ago, victors
at the Olympic Games were crowned with olive leaves
as their only reward.
