The Arts and Crafts movement began in Britain early in the 1880s. It was as much a philosophy as a design style. Morris and other influential people at the time were disgusted by poor quality mass goods. They believed surrounding yourself with better quality things was uplifting. Much Victorian era lighting was made in Arts and Crafts style. The style incorporates a lot of different elements, drawing on gothic and fantasy imagery and incorporating stained glass, stone, wood and other natural materials.
A lot of what people call Art Deco and Art Nouveau is Arts and Crafts style.
